Talk by Prof. Dr. Justin Powell
Important contributions in sociological research on education, social disadvantages, and inequality exist. Yet despite acknowledging divers factors of social and educational disadvantage in reproducing social inequality, studies often fail to grapple with the nexus of dis/ability and social disadvantage. In contemporary societies, education policies and systems powerfully define disability and reproduce inequalities. Sociological approaches to analyze dis/ability, to special educational needs, and to inclusive education emphasize such dimensions as exclusion/inclusion, segregation/integration, learning opportunities, inequality/equality, institutionalization, stigma, risk, and credentials and qualifications. These concepts are useful for our enhanced understanding of the nexus of dis/ability, education, and social inequality, yet ambiguities and ambivalence relating to “(dis)ability” remain. To recognize and understand the causes and consequences of disability-related inequality requires in-depth dialogue, and this benefits from results of studies on different levels and from cultural and structural analyses within diverse contexts. Thus, this presentation provides insights into disability and inequality across Europe and into select re-search topics, gaps, and results, focusing especially on disability from life course and international (and intranational) comparative perspectives. Sociology would increase its contributions and relevance were it to be more inclusive in analysing the processes that affect the educational and social opportunities and life chances of those who experience disablement and are differently classified and treated in educational organizations—with negative consequences across the life course.
