Talk by Prof. Dr. Fenella Fleischmann
Gender and migration background are important axes of social stratification that have received ample attention in the literature on inequality in education and on the labour market. Yet these two dimensions are frequently studied in isolation, such that studies of gender inequality tend to focus on persons without a migration back-ground, and research on ethnic inequality, particularly with regard to labour market outcomes, often focuses on men with a migration background. In this contribution to the lecture series, I will address how explanations for gender and ethnic inequality can be usefully applied, or need to be extended to study the intersection of gender and migration background. I will review theoretical explanations for both axes of stratification at the micro- and macro-levels and discuss how they may explain both forms of inequality. In this discussion, I will address the question when and why gender and migration background create additive disadvantages (the ‘double jeop-ardy’ scenario) or rather interact to create specific constellations of inequality faced by persons with specific combinations of characteristics (the intersectional perspective). Prof. Dr. Fleischmann will illustrate her theoretical arguments with empirical findings from two studies that examined ethnic variation in gender gaps: a 10-country comparative study of educational inequality, and a study of labour market outcomes in Germany.
