Les animaux et leur système nerveux ont évolué pour assurer la reproduction. Bien que chaque espèce ait des modes de parade nuptiale et d’accouplement différents, certains mécanismes communs sont conservés : la manière dont le système nerveux met en œuvre les différences entre les sexes au cours du développement, organise les séquences d’actions, code l’approche et la récompense, et communique lors des interactions sociales. Nous utilisons la mouche à fruits Drosophila melanogaster, chez laquelle nous pouvons manipuler l’action des gènes ainsi que le développement et l’activité des neurones à l’aide d’outils génétiques avancés, afin d’aborder des questions fondamentales concernant les circuits neuronaux orchestrant le comportement reproductif.
Nous nous concentrons sur les circuits responsables de la génération des schémas moteurs et sur l’architecture des réseaux neuromusculaires, ainsi que sur les mécanismes de coordination d’ordre supérieur des comportements moteurs complexes et des séquences comportementales. De plus, nous nous intéressons à la communication entre le système nerveux et le reste du corps. Nous étudions la signalisation inter-organes dans le contexte du comportement sexuel pendant l’accouplement et cherchons à comprendre comment la détection du liquide séminal influence le comportement sexuel des femelles et comment les signaux émis par les femelles affectent la distribution du liquide séminal chez les mâles.
