    Description

This course explores the relationship between culture, family, and mental health across diverse social and cultural contexts. Rather than treating culture as a simple background factor, students examine how it shapes the experience, expression, and treatment of mental health, with families at the center of these processes. The course addresses topics such as development, migration, acculturation, intergenerational dynamics, racism, and displacement, and considers how families can both protect against and contribute to psychological distress. Drawing on decolonial and intersectional perspectives, students critically reflect on cultural humility, professional practice, and their own cultural position in relation to mental health work and research.
