    Description

This course offers an introduction to adult clinical neuropsychology, a discipline that integrates psychology, neurology, and the neurosciences to understand how brain activity underlies our behaviour and what impairments can reveal about it. After a brief look at the key milestones that have shaped this discipline, we will explore the links between brain structures and cognitive functions, as well as the mechanisms of plasticity that allow the brain to reorganize itself. Drawing on concrete clinical situations, students will be guided toward a better understanding of how functions such as attention, memory, language, executive functions, and social cognition operate by examining how brain injury can disrupt them. The course will cover the main clinical syndromes encountered in practice: aphasia, agnosia, hemispatial neglect, memory disorders, neurocognitive disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders, among others, as well as the core principles of assessment and care for brain-injured patients.

    Training objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to identify the main tools used to investigate brain function in neuropsychology, describe the principal categories of pathology that may affect it, and draw on the theoretical models that explain the resulting cognitive deficits.
