Opening of the Alevi burial ground in the Bremgarten cemetery in Bern
On 9 May 2025, Switzerland's first Alevi burial ground was opened at the Bremgarten cemetery in Bern. Around 40,000 Alevis live in Switzerland, who can now also bury their deceased according to Alevi rites.
The city council approved a sum of around CHF 300,000 for the burial ground in June 2024.
The new burial ground incorporates various elements of Alevi tradition; for example, the graves are arranged in a circle, which is reminiscent of the Alevi prayer dance ‘Semah’. The rotating movements symbolise both the eternal cycles of nature and life as well as the movement of the planets around the sun.
