Guest lecture by Daniel Boyarin, "The Ambivalence of the Historian: Josephus caught between peace and Andreia", 16 May 2024, 17:15, MIS 11, salle Laure Dupraz

“Daniel Boyarin,” a prominent conservative rabbi confided to me not long ago, “is one of the two or three greatest rabbinic scholars in the world,” and—dropping his voice a notch—“possibly even the greatest.” Jack Miles (Professor of English and Religious Studies, UC Irvine).

A meticulous, daring and provocative scholar of Jewish culture and history, Boyarin is a prolific author, a small sample of his bibliography including: The No-State Solution: A Jewish Manifesto (2023); Imagine No Religion: How Modern Abstractions Hide Ancient Realities (2016); The Jewish Gospels: The Story of the Jewish Christ (2013); Queer Theory and the Jewish Question (2003); Carnal Israel: Reading Sex in Talmudic Culture (1995).

Boyarin is part of the advisory board of the new Fribourg based project Women, Martyrdom, & Religious Drama in the Abrahamic Traditions (WOMARD) that studies the dramatic traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Shi’i Islam from a comparative perspective. The WOMARD team are delighted to welcome Boyarin to Fribourg. Please join us!
