  • 2.5.2018 - Day of Europe at the University of Fribourg

A Common Historiography for Europe? The Example of Reformation in the Carpathian Basin

2017 has been the year of commemoration of the Reformation in 1517. In Eastern Europe the Reformation had a different history because of the encouter with Eastern Church traditions. After the end of the Hungarian kingdom by the defeat against the Turks in the Battle of Mohács in 1526, Reformation identity and national identity were intertwined in many forms. After the political change in Eastern Europe, attempts were made in several places to work out a common historiography, similar to the "Ecumenical Church History" (Fribourg 1998).
The conference with experts from Hungary and Romania will be accompanied by an exhibition, prepared by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on "Five Centuries of the Reformation in Hungary" and the National Museum of Hungary, and a musical cultural programme.

  • 20.-22.6.2018 - Study Days: In Christ Together Towards the Centre

The Study Centre for Faith and Society invites to its 5th Study Days

The pneumatological focus of the 2017 conference will be incorporated in the christological perspective of the forthcoming gathering. This christological perspective will be enriched by the different Christian backgrounds of the participants and speakers. The topic “In Christ” will be addressed in a polyphony of different confessional approaches. The Study Centre is delighted to hear of current developments of collaboration between numerous Swiss churches, and hopes to further this collaboration through the 2018 conference.

Of major importance is that the 2018 conference will be officially endorsed by both the Confederation of Swiss Protestant Churches as well as the Swiss Catholic Bishops. We believe that this is an important sign for the collaboration of Christians in Switzerland. It is our privilege to announce that keynote speakers will be Prof. Alister McGrath (Oxford University), Gottfried Locher (President of the Swiss Protestant Churches), The Rt Revd Graham Tomlin (Bishop of Kensington), Urban Federer (Abbot of the Benedictines in Einsiedeln), Sabine Brändlin (Member of the council of the Swiss Protestant Churches) and Christian Hennecke (Catholic Vicar General).
