What does it mean to see the world through another’s eyes? This seminar examines how literature and philosophy unsettle the ideal of a disembodied, universal perspective by foregrounding the situatedness of every point of view. Literary works do more than represent different viewpoints: they invite readers to share other experiences, inhabit unfamiliar worlds, and expand the horizons of their own perception. Through shifting voices, changing focalizations, and experiments in narrative form, they invite us to inhabit worlds that unsettle established ways of seeing. Bringing fiction into dialogue with phenomenology, hermeneutics, and contemporary political thought, we will examine how narrative fosters empathy, imagination, and the capacity to understand lives different from our own. Rather than erasing differences, the sharing of perspectives can deepen our awareness of plurality and enrich our sense of a common world. Readings will address questions of perspective-taking and empathy, selfhood and alterity, testimony and imagination, asking how shifts in viewpoint can challenge established orders of meaning and open new possibilities for thought. The seminar invites participants to reflect on perspective not merely as a narrative technique, but as a philosophical problem at the heart of experience and coexistence.
