Research at the IDCMI: Understanding and Shaping Media Innovation

The IDCMI is dedicated to researching and developing innovative solutions to the challenges faced in digital communication and media environments.

At the IDCMI, we investigate how the production, distribution, use and reception of media content are changing in digital, data-driven and platform-dominated media environments. Our focus includes, amongst other things, the role of innovations such as AI and algorithms in journalism and media production, the impact on information behaviour, and the interaction between media organisations and their audiences. The aim of our research is not only to contribute to an understanding of these changes, but also to the development of responsible technologies that improve the quality and diversity of the information on offer and strengthen democratic participation.

The research will also focus on how such technologies can be used responsibly in media production so that they bring added value to media organisations, users and society as a whole.

The IDCMI aims to develop solutions to the profound sector-specific and democratic challenges facing the media and communications sector – at regional, national and international levels. In connection with this, the institute aims to establish and further develop infrastructures and methodologies for researching digital communication. Furthermore, the IDCMI aims to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to critically understand developments in today’s digital society.
