The staff in the Languages, Literatures and Music Collections are on hand to assist you with your research and answer any questions you may have.
The library is open and accessible to anyone interested in exploring or using it. The BCU/KUB's rules on use and borrowing apply. Most items are available on open access. Other items are held in the stacks and can be borrowed via the catalogue.

Booking a locker, a room or a cubicle
The BCU/KUB provides various types of lockers, as well as 800 study and reading spaces equipped with wireless internet (Wi-Fi) in four reading rooms and in the open-access areas. These spaces are available free of charge to everyone.
There are rooms set aside for group work, which can be booked for groups of 2 to 12 people for a few hours, as well as individual work stations (cubicles), intended primarily for academic work and research, which can be booked until 30 June or 31 December of the current year.

Setting up a reserved collection
Academic staff teaching languages, literature and music at the University of Fribourg may request the creation of a reserved collection. To do so, the documents required for the course are grouped together in a dedicated area and temporarily reserved; they cannot be borrowed whilst the collection is active.
Reserved collections are located on the second floor (for languages and literature) and on the fourth floor (for musicology) of the BCU/KUB.
A seminar collection generally comprises up to 20 documents. As a rule, any documents listed in the Fribourg catalogue (swisscovery Fribourg-Freiburg) may be included.
A reserved collection can be set up for the duration of a semester or an academic year. To request the creation of a reserved collection, please contact the corresponding person for your field of research.

Information literacy training and guided tours
Guided tours of our open-access collections
We usually organise guided tours at the start of the semester for students, researchers and teaching staff. If you are teaching a course and would like to arrange a tour for your students, please contact the corresponding person for your field of research.
Information literacy
We offer information literacy training for Bachelor’s and Master’s students in the fields of languages, literature and music.
This course consists of four modules, spread over two years at a rate of one module per semester. It can be taken in French, German or English.
Participants will gain a basic understanding of how the BCU works, how to use the Discovery Fribourg catalogue, how to search bibliographic databases, and how to manage and compile bibliographies using specialised software.

Open access publications
You can deposit your open-access publications free of charge on FOLIA, the University of Fribourg’s official digital repository.
Our academic librarians will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding open-access publishing opportunities in the fields of languages, literature and music.

Research data
The University of Fribourg provides its researchers with a network of Data Stewards. The Data Stewards are the first point of contact for questions relating to research data. They advise researchers on best practice regarding the management and open access of their research data, throughout the data lifecycle.
Data Stewards can review Data Management Plans (DMPs) and provide advice on data backup, storage and long-term archiving, whilst taking into account the specific characteristics of the data in question, as well as ethical and disciplinary practices and requirements. In the case of the OLOS data platform, Data Stewards can also allocate storage space and provide technical support.

e-Piano
On the 4th floor of the open-access musicology section, an electronic piano (Roland LX9 PE) is available to all users in a room specially designated for this purpose. The electronic piano can be used free of charge, either on request or by booking (up to two weeks in advance), for a maximum of four hours.
