In July 2025, the historic city of Fribourg will host a festival of medieval theatre: twelve performances, in various languages and presented by a variety of troupes professional and amateur, international and local, that represent the rich culture of early theatrical tradition in Europe and beyond. The programme will include rarely-performed Fribourg and Swiss plays; there will also be plays from further afield, from Italy to Iran. Detailed programme notes will enable audiences to understand productions in various languages; some productions will also be preceded by short introductory talks by scholars attending the International Medieval Theatre conference, with which the festival coincides. A public lecture on early Swiss drama will also be offered.
