Angular momentum in solids is most prominently utilized in magnetic memory, which stores the bits of data in our electronic devices as different orientations of the electron spin. There are a plethora of questions yet unanswered however when it comes to controlling magnetic properties in materials on fundamental timescales, timescales a thousand or a million times faster than current technology. In this talk, I will introduce how we can use circular, or chiral, vibrations of atoms in a crystal to produce angular momentum and so couple to and control magnetic order. I will then show how we can use these vibrations as a fundamental degree of freedom, similar to the electronic spin in spintronic technologies, and present examples of recent theoretical predictions for novel physical phenomena from my group.
