Exploring the World of Sleep: Mechanisms and Functions

Sleep is a highly complex phenomenon with diverse functions and purposes. Those sleep related functions and their underlying mechanisms are subject of high interest in present research. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of recent findings and open questions regarding the purposes of sleep, focusing on memory and metabolic processes. In this context, we will discuss neurophysiological methods utilized to describe and understand the processes acting during sleep.

The participants will have to write an essay presenting their own research questions and how they attempt to investigate them in a scientific approach.
