The question of the restitution of colonial artefacts is one of the most current controversies on how Europe should presently handle its colonial past.
In 2015 media artists Nora Al-Badri and Jan Nikolai Nelles intervened spectacularly into the debate. They clandestinely produced a 3D-scan of the famous bust of Nerfertiti, exhibited in Neues Museum Berlin. Then, they exhibited a replica at the Biennale in Cairo and further published the source code on the digital commons. Doing so, they connected the debate on restitution to (the anthropologically very relevant) questions of materiality, authenticity, ownership and value of colonial artefacts.
The discussion takes place in the framework of the course „Anthropological introduction into postcolonial critique and practice“ (convened by Dr. Rohit Jain).
