  • Jelena Gligorijevic

    Sounds of Dissent: Popular Music and Politics in Brexit Britain
    Jelena Gligorijević is a popular music scholar with a strong international academic record spanning Serbia, Britain, Finland, and Switzerland, and with multiple research interests – from Cavalera’s World Metal projects to queer karaoke. Her primary field of expertise is in issues of identity, power, and politics in Balkan popular music across the former Yugoslav region, notably Serbia. The best case in point is her doctoral dissertation titled Contemporary Music Festivals as Micronational Spaces: Articulations of National Identity in Serbia’s Exit and Guča Trumpet Festivals (2019), which explores issues of national identity in post-Milošević Serbia using the country’s two major music festivals as case studies. She is currently affiliated to University of Fribourg, Switzerland, where she is doing smaller-scale ethnographic research on cultural and political meaning-making surrounding St. Gallen’s alternative music venue “Palace”.

  • Maria Hämmerli

    Research projet on "orthodox ethics"

    Dr. Maria Hämmerli is a scholar of Religious Studies, specialized in Orthodox Christianity. With a PhD obtained at the UniFr, her research expertise spans a variety of topics, from the sociology and history of Orthodox migrations to Western Europe and Orthodox diaspora issues, to Orthodox identity and the relationship between Orthodoxy, ethnicity and nationalism. She is currently collaborating with the Religious Studies department of the University of Erfurt (Germany), working on developing an “Orthodox ethic”, combining Max Weber’s approach in his “Protestant ethic”, social-anthropological theories of the gift as well as specific aspects of Orthodox theology.

    Transmitting the untransmittable – Sufi teachings in contemporary Europe

     This habilitation thesis deals with the teachings of popular Sufi authorities of the late 20th and early 21st centuries in various European countries. It examines the conceptions of God, the cosmos, humans, and their spiritual path of development as well as nature, tolerance and interreligious dialogue. The thesis then asks, to what extent these conceptions are products of their context in the sense that although they refer to well-known Sufi teachings from the past, they react to central debates and contextual conditions of the current time, including wars, social unrest, religious radicalization, or the climate crisis. The contents and the forms in which these teachings are conveyed, are analyzed as products of a globally entangled history, in which, depending on the Sufi lineage, ideas from various Hindu, Islamic or Western esoteric traditions come together.
