The Earth Sciences unit of the Department of Geosciences is in charge of a Bachelor, a Master and a PhD curriculum in Earth Sciences, and service teaching to other natural sciences curricula, in particular to students of Geography and Biology. The MSc curriculum is established and taught together with the Institute of Geology of the University of Berne. The graduate education in sedimentology also includes a doctoral school programme together with the universities of Geneva, Lausanne, Berne, and Basle (http://earth-processes.cuso.ch/). |

The University of Fribourg is bilingual and teaching at the Bachelor level is exclusively in French or/and German. Students can choose to take their exams in either language. At the Master and PhD levels, classes are taught in English. |

Earth Sciences and Geography are both part of the Department of Geosciences. Presently the Earth Sciences unit employs 4 professors and 2 senior lecturers. Major decisions are taken by a Council that comprises the teaching staff of both units and representatives of the technical/administrative staff and students. |

Infrastructure |

The Earth Sciences unit of the Department of Geosciences is located on the campus of Pérolles. The appointee will have access to the equipment of the unit (FEG-SEM, X-ray diffraction and XRF lab, chemistry lab, thin section lab); access to infrastructure of other departments/ institutes is possible upon bilateral agreement. A central store for chemicals, labware and office supplies is located in the basement of the chemistry building. |

The new professor will receive a share of the Geosciences Department’s operating budget, which is calculated according to standard procedures in use in the Faculty and in the Department. She or he will also be able to acquire new equipment from an annual allowance that the Department receives for this purpose. However, the appointee is expected to actively seek additional external funding. |

The new professor will be granted CHF 80’000, distributed over two years for the acquisition of apparatus. In addition, special grants are given for the acquisition of books and computers. |

The new professor will have access to the Earth Sciences unit's administrative and technical staff (one secretary and two technicians). Assistant positions and tutors will be attributed in accordance with the other academic staff. |
