Foucault et les normes du savoir, lecture by Pascal Engel

General public Lecture

Lecture by Pascal Engel, philosopher of science (UNIGE), who will present his latest work on the philosophy of Michel Foucault.

"Michel Foucault's work is a reflection on norms. This book deals mainly with his conceptions of the norms of knowledge and his project of a genealogy and history of truth. Foucault reverses the classical positions: instead of talking about truth, he talks about procedures of veridiction and techniques of truth; instead of talking about the justification of knowledge, he deals with the will to know and proposes an ethics of truth. But to what extent does he really deal with truth and knowledge? Does he not reduce these notions to mere effects, which disappear under practices, institutions and social forms? And if they lose all objectivity and universal aim, how can they serve the cause of liberation that Foucault sought? (Online summary)

The lecture will be held on Wednesday 26 November 2025 at 7.15 p.m. at the University of Fribourg (next to the railway station), in building MIS03, room 3113.

The lecture will be given in French.
