There are many kinds of experience that are widely considered to be "transformative" of who we are, how we view the world, and how we live in it – aesthetic, religious, psychedelic, political, traumatic. But what does it mean to have an experience? What is the relationship between experience and subjectivity? In what sense do some experiences transform us? What are the possible modes of a transformative experience? In this seminar, we will attempt to answer these questions by considering some classical texts, from ancient thought to contemporary feminist theories, and exploring some possible modes of transformative experience: religion, politics, art, psychedelia, and science.
