Welcome to Zoology, one of the units in the Department of Biology at Fribourg. We participate in the teaching leading to the award of a general euro-compatible (Bologna) BSc and offer the possibility of specialization in the field of neuro- and developmental biology, both at the euro-compatible MSc and PhD levels. How does our brain function? 

Simon Sprecher and his research group have been awarded a "Starting Grant" pf SFr 1.5Mio for the next 5 years by the European Research Council into order to study how the brain functions using the model organism Drosophila melanogastor. This event is the subject of a news report on the main University web site and in the local newspaper "La Liberté"

 

Self repairing broken hearts: the amazing zebrafish.

 

Biological explorations in the Jaźwińska Lab at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland are looking into the genetic triggers of fin and heart regeneration in zebrafish and have made some intriguing discoveries that could benefit humans.  Part of a recent programme "36.9°" concerning heath matters, broadcast on the first French Swiss TV antenna (RTS Un), was devoted to heart infarction and stem tissue regeneration. The work of Prof. Anna Jazwinska and her research group on the zebrafish was featured (ca. min 37-40).
