A l'occasion du 50ème anniversaire de l'OCDE, le Secrétariat d'Etat à l'économie (SECO) et le Centre de recherche sur la compétitivité de l'Université de Fribourg ont co-organisé un colloque public dont le sujet principal était le développement impressionnant des investissements internationaux au cours des dernières décennies et ses implications sur la croissance et l'emploi en Suisse et dans le monde. Dans ce context en perpétuel évolution, l'OCDE a joué un rôle majeur dans les négociations et la définition de recommandations régissant le comportement des gouvernements et des entreprises multinationales. Parmi les orateurs et panelistes les organisateurs ont eu l'honneur d'accueillir, entre autres, Pier-Carlo Padoan, Secrétaire général adjoint de l'OCDE, Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen, Secrétaire d'Etat et directrice du SECO ou le conseiller aux Etats fribourgeois Alain Berset.

Prof. Philippe Gugler taught a two days course on Economics of Competition Policy (June 7 and 8, 2011) within the doctoral PhD program of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Rome 1 (Sapienza).

The Center for Competitiveness and the University of Fribourg organized a conference in honor of Joseph Deiss, member of the advisory board of the Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg and current President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, on May 2nd, 2011. In addition to the intervention of Joseph Deiss, the University of Fribourg had the great privilege of welcoming Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nestlé, and Nicolas Michel, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and current professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. Guido Vergauwen, Rector of the University and Philippe Gugler, Vice-Rector of the University and director of the Center for Competitiveness respectively introduced and concluded the manifestation.

Professor Philippe Gugler, Michael Keller and Xavier Tinguely attended the 2011 International Business Conference on April 11-12 at the Henley Business School of the University of Reading (UK). Professor Philippe Gugler chaired a session on alliances.  

The Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg co-organized with the Scientific and Technological Center of the canton of Fribourg an international conference on clusters and competitiveness entitled "Clusters as Drivers of Regional Competitiveness: Strategic and Policy Issues" on March 25th, 2011. The aim of the conference was to explore the role of clusters as drivers of firms', regions' and nations' competitiveness. It brought together the most eminent academics in the field, successful cluster managers from different European regions and political representatives in charge of the regional economic promotion. As keynote speakers we had the honor to welcome Professor Christian Ketels from the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness of the Harvard Business School, Professor Örjan Sölvell, director of the Center for Strategy and Competitiveness of the Stockholm School of Economics, Ambassador Eric Scheidegger, head of the Promotion Activities Directorate of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and Beat Vonlanthen, State Councillor and Minister of Economic Affairs of the Canton of Fribourg. The conference was attended by more than 300 people from more than 20 countries. The audience was composed of MOC Harvard Business School affiliates members, academics, cluster managers, economic and investment promotion leaders, business CEOs and firm managers.

Professor Philippe Gugler gets a distinction at the Harvard Business School (HBS) last December 14th, 2010. He has been elected to the HBS Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness Hall of Fame for his "outstanding contributions" in the field of competitiveness. This distinction was awarded by the world famous Professor Michael Porter last December 14th, 2010. In his laudatio, Professor Michael Porter's motivated this distinction according to the important contribution of Professor Gugler in the field of research, education as well as his direct involvement in projects of regional development.

Professor Philippe Gugler has been elected as Vice-Chairman of the European International Business Academy (EIBA) at its General Assembly which took place in Porto (Portugal) last December 11th, 2010.

Mandated by the Economic Development of Riviera (PROMOVE), the Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg released a report entitled "La Compétitivité de la région de la Riviera" on the competitiveness of the Riviera region, authored by prof. Philippe Gugler, Michael Keller and Xavier Tinguely.

Le Centre de recherche sur la compétitivité de l'Université de Fribourg et l'Institut de droit économique de la Haute Ecole zurichoise des sciences appliquées, ZHAW, organisent un colloque sur le thème "Aides publiques aux entreprises en difficulté: promotion ou distorsion de la concurrence et de la compétitivité?". Le colloque a lieu le 9 novembre 2009 de 10h15 à 12h15 à la Faculté des Sciences Economiques et Sociales de l'Université de Fribourg. The Center for Competitiveness and the ZHAW School of Management and Law (Winterthur) co-organizes a workshop on "State aids to enterprises in difficulty: promotion or distorsion of the rivalry and competitiveness?". It will take place at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences on november 9. 2009. The point of view will be discussed and exposed by different experts of politicics, economics and state. Le Prof. Philippe Gugler est membre de l'Observatoire de l'économie, nouvelle entité d'analyse économique mise sur pied par l'Etat de Fribourg et la Chambre de commerce Fribourg. L'Observatoire a pour mission d'évaluer la situation économique, d'anticiper certaines mesures à prendre et de fournir, notamment au Conseil d'Etat, un point de vue circonspect de la situation économique fribourgeoise. L'Observatoire, présidé par M. Phillot, Président de la Chambre de commerce, est composé de trois Conseillers d'Etat (MM. Lässer, Godel et Vonlanthen), de 7 représentants des principaux secteurs d'activités du canton ainsi que du Prof. Gugler.

Prof. Philippe Gugler ist Mitglied des Wirtschaftsobservatoriums, einer neuen Institution für wirtschaftliche Analyse, die gemeinsam vom Kanton Freiburg und der Handelskammer ins Leben gerufen wurde. Das Observatorium hat zum Ziel, die wirtschaftliche Situation im Kanton einzuschätzen und den Staatsrat mit beständigen Überlegungen zur Wirtschaftslage und der Antizipation notwendiger Massnahmen gezielt zu unterstützen. Das Observatorium wird von Herrn Phillot, Präsident der Handelskammer Freiburg, geleitet und umfasst zudem die Herren Staatsräte Lässer, Godel und Vonlanthen, sieben Vertreter der Hauptwirtschaftsektoren des Kantons und mit Prof. Gugler ein wissenschaftliches Mitglied.

Xavier Tinguely, assistant diplômé et doctorant auprès de la chaire de politique économique et sociale, a reçu un prix pour la présentation de son papier "Dunning, Rugman, Porter and the location issue: A three models perspective" lors de la "Second Reading IB conference" qui s'est tenue les 30 et 31 mars 2009 à l'Université de Reading, GB.

Prof. John Dunning, Philippe Gugler and Sarianna Lundan

Prof. John H. Dunning, close colleague and friend to prof. Gugler, passed away last January 29th, 2009. Prof. Dunning remainded at the forefront of teaching and research in international business for over forty years and remains the most cited academic expert in this field today. He has authored, co-authored or edited 50 books on this subject and on industrial and regional economics. His last books have been edited in 2008: "Multinational Enterprises and the Global Economy", co-edited with Sarianna Lundan and "Foreign Direct Investment, Location and Competitiveness", co-edited with Philippe Gugler. His biography, "Four Season of Scholar: some Personal Reflections of an International Business Economist" was published last October 2008. Prof. Dunning was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) by the Queen Elisabeth at Buckingham Palace last fall.

Lors de sa séance du jeudi 29 mai, le Conseil de la Fondation du 25^ème anniversaire de la Société de Banque Suisse à Fribourg en faveur de la Faculté des Sciences économiques et sociales de l’Université de Fribourg a décidé d’octroyer une bourse de CHF 8'000,-- à Mme Julie Michel, assistante doctorante auprès de la chaire de politique économique et sociale de l’Université de Fribourg.
