Breite Öffentlichkeit Vortrag
29.10.2026 17:15 - 19:00
Präsenzveranstaltung

This lecture will provide an overview of digital technologies employed at EU level for migration management focusing on the Eurosur (regulated by the Frontex Regulation) and large-scale IT systems for asylum, migration and border management. The lecture will provide key insights into their practical operation before delving into an analysis on the fundamental rights and rule of law challenges of these technologies (privacy, data protection, non-discrimination and right to an effective remedy). The role of AI in the operationalisation of these technologies will also be highlighted.
Niovi Vavoula is an Associate Professor and Chair in Cyber Policy at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance of the University of Luxembourg. Prior to her appointment, she was Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London. Her research focuses on the legal challenges, particularly regarding fundamental rights and the rule of law, posed by the regulation of new technologies, such as AI and cybersecurity, including law enforcement, criminal law and migration management.
