Visa

Before entering Switzerland, it is recommended to check all the rules and regulations that apply to your entrance and arrival to the country.

Citizens of countries that are members of the European Union : If you are from a country within the European Union you do not need any visa to enter Switzerland.

Bulgaria and Romania:  Protocol II extending the free circulation of the citizens of Romania and Bulgaria is in effect beginning on the first of July, 2009.  Romanian and Bulgarian citizens can enter Switzerland without a visa and stay as long as three months with a passport or a valid identity card.  Students will not need a visa and can make the demand for a permit of travel like all other students of the EU after the arrival to Fribourg at the cantonal authority of immigration.

Citizens of countries not part of the European Union : Please contact AT LEAST 3 MONTHS in advance the Swiss diplomatic representation in your country (Embassy, Consulate General) in order to learn what is necessary to gain entry into Switzerland and apply for the visa.  At this point, the service of international relations- Fribourg- will send a Letter of Acceptance of the University as a demand for a visa.
Once the application done, the diplomatic representation will transmit it to the "Service de la population et des Migrants" (Authority in Fribourg) which grants the visa. The authority will send an invoice of aprox. 95.- CHF to the student. This amount has to be paid directly by banktransfer. Only once the authority has received the amount, the visa application will be handled and granted.
