Teacher's firing stirs up church and state controversy

The ambiguous relationship between church and state can still cause controversy. Valentin Abgottspon, a teacher in the canton of Valais, says he's been fired over an incident where he removed a crucifix from his classroom. The official reason was the catch-all “breakdown of confidence” between the employee and the school. Abgottspon is the regional president of the Freethinkers Society of Switzerland. We hear from him as well as University of Fribourg professor René Pahud de Mortanges, a specialist in law and religion. He explains the last time the Federal Supreme Court ruled on the subject was in Ticino two decades ago:

The former book collection "Freiburger Veröffentlichungen aus dem Gebiete von Kirche und Staat" edited by Prof. Dr. Louis Carlen has found since 1998 a new editor by the name of Prof. Dr. René Pahud de Mortanges (Director of the Institute). The book collection is now called "Freiburger Veröffentlichungen zum Religionsrecht". By carrying on the book collection and renewing it the Institute wants to show that the relationship between State and religious communities has a considerable importance in religious constitutional law. The book collection contains scientific publications about the Law and Rights of Christian and non-Christian Churches. It contains essays treating canon and ecclesiastical law.
