Summary: To minimize unwanted noise and decoherence, quantum systems are typically kept as isolated from their environment as possible. In recent decades, it has been realized that the environment is not always detrimental but, when properly engineered, may act as a resource to, e.g., stabilize entangled states or design directional amplifiers. I will introduce an active approach to quantum reservoir engineering, where time-dependent control over a quantum system is used to manipulate the state of its environment. We developed a theoretical framework that provides an intuitive picture of how the environment may be controlled. Our results are in qualitative agreement with previous experimental results and may contribute to a paradigm shift: rather than focusing on isolating quantum systems, the quantum system is used to bring its environment into a state favorable for a desired task.
