PANEL DISCUSSION: «Not too much EU please! We are British! Swiss»

Panel Discussion Brexit and reluctant relationships of UK and Switzerland with the EU - 18 May 2016, 17-19 h, University of Fribourg, Pérolles II, Room A230, Bd de Pérolles 90, 1700 Fribourg, Switzerland

The Institute of Federalism and the Department of Contemporary History, University of Fribourg, are pleased to invite you to panel discussion on the upcoming referendum in the United Kingdom.

The interdisciplinary panel is comprised of:

  • Sir David Edward, Professor Emeritus at the School of Law, University of Edinburgh and former Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Communities
  • Astrid Epiney, Professor of European Law, University of Fribourg
  • Sean Müller, Dr., Lecturer and post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Political Science, University of Berne
  • Eva Maria Belser, Professor of Constitutional Law, University of Fribourg
  • Siegfreid Weichlein, Professor of European and Swiss Contemporary History, University of Fribourg

What would happen if the United Kingdom were to leave the European Union? Would more parliamentary sovereignty indeed be achieved through a Brexit? Would the UK be able to negotiate a Swiss-style deal?

Would Brexit lead to more member states wanting to leave the EU? What if Scotland or Northern Ireland want to stay? What are the democratic implications of multi-level governance in the EU? What role has the European Court of Justice played in European integration? These and more questions remain open in light of the upcoming referendum on 23 June in the UK.
