Martine Nida-Rümelin, professor of the philosophy of language, mind and the human sciences at the University of Fribourg since 1999, is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Jean Nicod Prize.

Awarded annually since 1993 by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the Jean Nicod Prize recognizes outstanding research in the philosophy of mind or the cognitive sciences. Among the previous recipients are such notable figures as Donald Davidson (1995), John Searle (2000), Ruth Millikan (2002), Michael Tomasello (2006), Ned Block (2013) and David Chalmers (2015).

In honoring Martine Nida-Rümelin, the Jean Nicod Prize has distinguished for the first time a researcher active in Switzerland. Her research focuses primarily on the metaphysics and phenomenology of conscious subjects and agents. As a binational citizen, Martine Nida-Rümelin is both the first Swiss and the first German to receive the Jean Nicod Prize.

The award ceremony will take place in Paris on May 10^th, following the first of four talks to be given by Martine Nida-Rümelin at the Jean Nicod Institute. Titled ‘Philosophical Fundamentals for Scientific Studies of Consciousness’, the talks by the laureate will form the basis for a monograph to be published by MIT Press, as is customary for each recipient of the Jean Nicod Prize.
