    Description

The lecture Évolution de la biodiversité (SBL.00071) aims to discover how biodiversity is distributed in space and how it has changed over time since the origin of life billions of years ago. We will discuss how different types of data (from geological and fossil record to genomes) can be used to make hypotheses about the drivers of species diversification and extinction. With one million species estimated to be threatened with extinction today, we will draw analogies between past mass extinction events and the ongoing biodiversity crisis. We will therefore discuss what can be learnt from deep-time evolution about the future of biodiversity. The course will involve frontal lectures but can also include group work and presentations by the students (depending on the size of the class). It will include hands-on sessions in which the students can explore online resources for biodiversity such as GBIF, IUCN, and PBDB and use simple tools in R to explore and plot these data (however, the course does not require prior knowledge of R). Cours donné en anglais.
