    Description

Introduction to basic statistical methods in geography and their use.

    SUMMARY :

    1. data exploration (spatial and temporal dimensions)

    2. theoretical distributions (discrete and continuous distribution models),

    3. statistical tests (parametric tests, non-parametric tests)

    4. linear regression (multiple regression, residuals)

    5. methods of time series analysis

    Training objectives

This course is the application-oriented part of the statistical methods learned in course MA.0401. The aim is to familiarise students both conceptually and technically with the application of quantitative methods, modelling in general and geography in particular. The course is intended to deepen the known theoretical methods and to show students how these can be applied to real problems from different areas of physical and human geography. Well-known theoretical methods are numerically realised in the programming language "R". Using available and self-generated data sets, these programmes are applied and the significance of the results and interpretation is discussed.
