This survey lecture course is intended to offer an overview of the development of English and American literature from the early modern period to the present. The course runs for two semesters. The first part, taught by Prof. Straub in autumn 2022, focuses on English Literature. The second part, taught by Prof. Austenfeld in spring 2023, focuses on American Literature.

First-year students are expected to take both parts of the lecture course in conjunction with one Introduction to Literary Studies proseminar in order to complete Module 2 of the BA LET study plan. They can take the Introductory Proseminar either in autumn 2022 or in spring 2023. There will be a written exam at the end of each of these three classes. Students need to achieve a pass grade in all three exams. The grade of the module exam consists of the average of the grades achieved in all three exams.

To gain credit regular attendance is mandatory. More than two unexcused absences disqualify students from gaining credit.

This lecture is only eligible for BA_LET students in their first year and BASI students. It is not open for  BA_LET students who need to complete Module 5 and MA students completing Modules 4 and 5. For these students,  Dr Ridvan Askin’s BA/MA lecture “The Romantic Project”, Friday 1-3pm, is one option.

On successful completion of the course, students will have gained an overview of the major literary movements and key works of English literature. They will have acquired a knowledge of the main concepts that shape each literary period.

Texts: The Norton Anthology of English Literature, Vols. 1 and 2 or Vols. B, C, D, E, and F. This anthology contains all the required primary literature. Additional material will be made available on Moodle. Copies of the Norton Anthology can be purchased at Librophoros.
