A Few Questions to Prof. Philipp Werner

1.    What is your research focus?

Prof. Werner: "We develop computational methods for the simulation of correlated electron systems and use them to study the properties of model systems and realistic materials. In particular, we are interested in time-dependent phenomena or nonequilibrium states induced by strong laser fields. The hope is that a deeper understanding of these effects will enable new ways of controlling material properties on an ultrafast timescale."

2.    What do you find particularly interesting/appealing about our Faculty?

Prof. Werner: "Especially in the physics department, there is a constructive atmosphere, where we try to support each other’s plans and ambitions."

3.    What do you wish to achieve here in Fribourg?

Prof. Werner: "Research-wise, I would like to maintain a high level of activity and quality which makes it attractive for ambitious PhD students and postdocs to work here. This is not an easy task if the whole operation is based to 90% on external funding, but so far it has worked out well."

4.    What is your personal message or passion you would like to share with our students?

Prof. Werner: "Show some curiosity and initiative. Our department is very small, and the access to the professors and research groups is easier than in most other places. Take advantage of this to really learn something."
