There is a deep and fundamental difference between two kinds of things: conscious individuals and what one may call mere things. Conscious individuals are capable of having experiential properties, properties such that it is like something to have them (e.g. being sad, enjoying a beautiful landscape, experiencing oneself as active in what one does, consciously thinking about puzzle) Conscious individuals have an ‘inner perspective’, there ‘is a world for them’. Mere things have no experiential properties, no ‘inner perspective’, there is no world for them.

In the seminar we will discuss, based on recent publications, questions such as the following: what exactly is the difference between conscious individuals and mere thing? How can one find out if a given individual is a conscious being (for instance, can we find out, and if so how, whether complex robots are conscious)? Why do conscious individuals deserve a particular kind of respect which is not required with respect to mere things?

Alle für unsere Debatten vorgesehenen Texte sind auf Englisch verfasst. Unsere Diskussion wird in beiden Sprachen (Englisch und Deutsch) stattfinden, wobei die Verwendung der Sprachen den Bedürfnissen der Teilnehmer angepasst wird.

Für die Teilnahme am Seminar ist Voraussetzung, dass Sie eine der beiden Sprachen (Englisch oder Deutsch) gut, auch aktiv, beherrschen. Bezüglich der anderen Sprache ist passive Kenntnis wünschenswert. 

Tiefgehendes, genaues Verständnis der Thematik. Fortentwicklung der für systematische philosophische Arbeit relevanten Kapazitäten. Freude an gemeinsam im Gespräch gewonnenen philosophischen Einsichten.
