Paläographie und Kodikologie

Das Fach "Historische Hilfswissenschaften und Mittellatein" umfasst methodisch betrachtet zwei grundlegende Disziplinen der Mittelalterforschung. Unter "Historischen Hilfswissenschaften" versteht man eine Reihe von Teilwissenschaften, wie zum Beispiel die Paläographie, die Kodikologie, die Diplomatik, die Epigraphik, bis zur historischen Fachinformatik, die die wissenschaftliche Aufarbeitung von zum Teil sehr unterschiedlichen historischen Quellen ermöglichen sollen. An der Universität Freiburg hat vor allem die Handschriftenforschung (F. Steffens, 1889–1931, H. Förster 1931–1960, P. Ladner 1966–2003) eine lange Tradition, welche durch die beiden Teildisziplinen, die Paläographie (Lehre der alten Schriften) und die Kodikologie (Handschriftenkunde) in der Forschung und in der Lehre einen zentralen Ort einnimmt. Im Rahmen des Lehrangebots werden methodische Einführungsvorlesungen in diese beiden Disziplinen angeboten, die für Studierende der "allgemeinen Geschichte" obligatorisch sind. Das Fach "Mittelatein" hat die Texterzeugnisse aus der Zeit von etwa 500 bis 1500, zum Gegenstand. Das Fach ist interdisziplinär ausgerichtet und versteht sich als Grundlagenfach der Mediävistik.
