This workshop comprises a tutorial and quizzes, available on a Moodle page. Both the tutorial and the quizzes can be completed entirely online from home. During the spring term, we are offering four sessions in the computer room for those experiencing difficulties with installing the statistics software.
Successful completion of the workshop during the registration period is required for the mark for the corresponding statistics course to be awarded. The deadline is set for the day before the exam for the corresponding statistics course.
The first part of the SPSS workshop introduces students to the basics of working with the SPSS statistical software. Students learn about the structure of the user interface and understand how data is organised in SPSS. They are also shown how to create, import and edit datasets, for example by importing external files (e.g. Excel), defining variables, and carrying out simple data manipulations such as filtering or selecting cases.
Another focus is on descriptive statistics. Students learn how to calculate measures of central tendency such as the mean, median, standard deviation and frequencies, and how to present the results in the form of tables or simple graphs. The aim of the workshop is to provide a solid introduction to working with SPSS.
Training aims
Students acquire a basic understanding of how to use SPSS. They understand the user interface and can open, create and edit simple datasets.
They are able to define variables, import data from external sources and carry out simple data manipulation. They can also apply basic methods of descriptive statistics, calculate key statistics and present results in tables or graphs.
Upon completion of the workshop, they will be able to analyse simple data sets independently and interpret basic statistical results correctly.
