To be or not to be federal?

Research should not remain in the confines of the University! With this motto, the team of the Institute of Federalism was present at the Explora Festival of the University of Fribourg in September 2025 to highlight the work that we do and its relevance for Switzerland and the world. Our stand included games, two quizzes on national and international federalism, weighing your vote to show the differences in democratic strength of the cantons (displayed with the help of coloured cantonal flags and kapla blocks), fishing your fundamental rights as well as a constitutional tarot highlighting global constitutionalism. From explaining the different aspects of federalism to introducing the audience, including children to relevant aspects of the Swiss Constitution, the team was able to convey to a wider public the importance of work in federalism, democracy and human rights.

The team of the IFF consisted of Lucile Apfel, Marlene Collette, Arianna Guidolin, Michael Hediger, Yvonne Heiter, Rekha Oleschak, Michael Egger and Jean-Pierre Blickle. More pictures and the complete programme are available on the UNIFR Explora site.
