We are in the midst of strong global upwards trends in GDP and population. Both contribute to climate change. This talk will feature a number of problems with the conclusion that we should therefore put emphasis on slowing down or reversing these growth trends. Some of these problems are unique to either population growth or economic growth but some are common to both. Prominently among the latter is the fact that reducing emissions to zero – and doing so in a short time frame – requires a different approach than merely reducing emissions to some extent.
