DCM gets WEAVE project

As part of the WEAVE Lead Agency Programme, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Flemish Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO) and the Walloon Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (F.R.S.-FNRS) are jointly funding the research project "Understanding ALGorithmic gatekeepers to promote EPIstemic welfare" (ALGEPI) with a total budget of CHF 2.4 million.

Researchers from the fields of communication, law and computer science are working on the consequences of algorithmic selection for the media and the public. From the University of Fribourg, Manuel Puppis (DCM) and Denis Lalanne (Human-IST) are participating.

The communication science part of the project, which is being carried out jointly by the Universities of Fribourg and Antwerp, will examine how media organisations use algorithms to personalise their content, how users judge algorithmic selection and what lessons can be learned for the media industry and media policy. We compare different media sectors and media systems.
