CALL FOR PAPERS
18th Annual Conference of the AGRH French-Speaking Human Resource Management Association
September 19 – 21, 2007 at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland
Topic of the Conference
"TOOLS, MODELS AND FADS IN HRM"
A body of knowledge, tools, and good practice models that provides standards and frames of reference to the community of HR practitioners has built up around the establishment of HR as a professional function and the certification of HRM training courses. How are models institutionalized in HRM? How are “good practices” identified and then spread by the professional HR community? What effects does this have? What is or could be the role of researchers in the production, circulation, and evaluation of these models?
These topical questions highlight a grey area in the state of HRM research. Whereas a body of research has opened new perspectives for the analysis of mechanisms for circulating tools and practices within organizations (neoinstitutionalist approaches, study of management fashions), there have been very few real debates on the relationship to be established between the benefits of these mechanisms and the definition of functional frames of reference for the action. What links should be drawn between the critical review of best practices and their existence, and practical examinations of the validity, conditions for application and transfer or, more generally, the success of these models?
The 2007 Annual AGRH Conference aims to provide this link by combining contributions from researchers and testimonials from practitioners. Contributions may deal with a number of topics and questions:
- The professionalization of HR: How are professional standards for the HR community defined, circulated, and institutionalized?
- HRM trends: How are trends in HRM characterized? What are they triggered by? How are effects measured? Is it possible to identify the effects of fashions in academic research?
- History of tools: How was the current body of tools developed? Who was involved in this process? How can the greater or lesser durability of certain tools be explained?
- Tools in practice: What are the conditions for tool application and success in HRM? Are “best practices” transferable? What can a company learn from a model case?
- National models: Do national HRM models still exist? How are HRM practices embedded at national level? What are the convergence and divergence factors for national HRM practices?
- Researcher role in institutionalization: What role can or could researchers play in the definition of standards or the identification and evaluation of good practices?
Types of contributions and dates:
Although the AGRH Annual Meeting will be held in French, participants are welcome from all countries and papers will be accepted in English with the condition of having a summary in French.
Two types of contribution may be presented:
- A communication: papers are presented by one or more researchers and submitted to the evaluation committee (double-blind evaluation by two members of the evaluation committee). Evaluations are communicated to authors with the opinion of the scientific committee (acceptance, minor modification, major modification, rejection). The scientific committee will mark research papers either for workshops or presentations in the form of poster sessions. In both cases, papers will be published in the proceedings of the Annual Meeting.
1- Intention of communication: one page presenting the communication project
2- Full text of communication: up
to 45,000 characters (with spaces), compliant with presentation
standards
- A mixed symposium or a contribution to a mixed symposium: organized by one or more researchers in collaboration with one or more practitioners. The afternoon of Friday September 21 will be organized with the help of the Swiss Association for Human Resource Management (HR Swiss) with a number of parallel workshops on contemporary HR topics. Proposals for mixed symposiums (two pages describing the problem, the anticipated sequence of events, and the presentation of interveners) will be submitted to the scientific committee of the Annual Meeting and to representatives of HR Swiss. The organizers will accept additional contributions from practitioners or experts proposed by HR Swiss representatives.
