The function of the sensorimotor cortex, including in the large sense the motor cortical areas in the frontal lobe and the somatosensory cortex in the parietal lobe, is studied in primates in order to establish general principles of manual dexterity motor control. More specifically, the performance of the hand is assessed, together with plastic changes induced in the cerebral cortex by motor practice and learning.
