Peace and Security: Geneva Track II Conference Series 2014: «The Role of Dialogue and Understanding for Peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Asia»
October 31, 2014
On Friday, 31 October, Nicolas Schmitt has been invited to participate to a conference which took place in the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. The Conference was part of the «Peace and Security: Geneva Track II Conference Series 2014» and was devoted to «The Role of Dialogue and Understanding for Peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Asia».
Nicolas Schmitt’s conference title was «The Possible Role of Federalism in De-Escalation on the Korean Peninsula». He explained that federalism could be a solution for the reunification of the Korean Peninsula (as it has been for the reunification of Germany), but taking into account all pre-conditions required by a federal system, it could be the case with a reasonable chance of success only within a very long process implying a strong political will of both sides, because the obstacles are high. Moreover, it is not conceivable to have a Korean federation composed of two member states only: such so called dyadic federations proved weak and almost always collapsed in the past.
