The Earth Science Unit offers a large selection of sample preparation and analysis equipment.  Our labs are open to researchersand students of the faculty, but also for third party groups (academic and private sector, please contact B. Grobéty or Ch. Neururer for further information)




X-RAy lab

XRD Rigaku Ultima IV:

Routine qualitative phase analysis, two multisample holder with 25 slots, which can be loaded simultaneously, Cu-tube, two detectors available: a scintillation detector and a 1-D DTEX detector,  Bragg Brentano and parallel beam optics, software for phase identification, peak fitting, Rietveld analysis

SCAnning electron microscopy lab

Field emission gun equipped SEM (FEI XL30 Sirion FEG)  with Secondary Electron (SE), Backscatter Electron (BSE) and Cathodoluminescence (CL) detector, OIM Electron Backscatter Diffraction system (EBSD), EDAX Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy system EDS). Used for imaging SE (Resolution: 2-10 nm), chemical analysis (EDS), qualitative: visualization of trace elements (CL, growth zoning) and crystallographic orientation, texture analysis (EBSD), automatized single particle analyses.
