Personal Info:

My PhD focuses in the field of ancient metallurgy called Archeometallurgy. During millenium, smiths have shaped pieces of metal into functional objects (for farming, war, domestic life). This activity produce wastes into the hearth, called SLAGS. They are found now during excavations of metallurgical sites everywhere in Europe, Asia, Africa.

Nowadays in Mali, smiths are still forging in a traditional way.

During my fieldwork campains in the Dogon Country, I ask them to forge pieces of iron in very different ways (different types of iron, of weight, 1 bar/2 bars etc) and consequently to produce a large range of slags very different.

My aim is to understand how slags are formed and what are the technical actions or parameters (durations, types of iron etc) that influence composition/morphology/mineralogy of these slags.
