Why does a volcano erupt explosively? What factors
determine the style of eruption? In order to solve these fascinating questions it is
necessary to better understand the specific volcanic processes operating during
explosive eruptions (e.g. hydroclastic vs. pyroclastic magma fragmentation,
magma rising, gas exsolution, conduit dynamics, etc).
Aim of my present research is to re-evaluate the
puzzling processes triggering maar eruptions. For this purpose I am studying
sedimentological and volcanological aspects of maar deposits from the maar type
locality (Eifel, Germany). And a quantitative morphological and micro-textural particle
study of juvenile clasts -the unique witnesses of volcanic eruptions- is being
done.
