Archaeometry
Rocks and rock-like synthetic materials such as silicate ceramics were the first materials shaped and used by man. Physical and chemical characteristics of such archeological objects give insight in the evolution of manufacturing technology, raw material sources, transport and trade in ancient time. Earth Scientist are, due to the prevalent "rocky" nature of these objects, predestined to do the "material science" investigations of such archeological objects. Our group has specialized in the analysis of silicate ceramics and the metallurgy of iron.
