Collaboration with the Natural History Museum Fribourg (Switzerland), Botanic Gardens Conservation International BGCI (UK), Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques, Geneva (Switzerland), Laboratory of Dendrogeomorphology of the University of Bern (Switzerland), Institute of Botany of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Baku (Azerbaijan), Institute of Plant Genetics of the National Research Council, Palermo (Italy), Botanic Garden and Botanic Museum, Berlin (Germany), Botanic Garden and Department of Biology of the University of Crete, Heraklion (Greece), Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Kornik (Poland), Chenshan Botanical Garden and Plant Science Research Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai (China) and Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xishuangbanna (China).

Endemics of the Atlantic coasts of Western Europe: Conservation biology, historical biogeography and landscape genetics of chosen dune endemic plants of Western France and Northern Spain, e.g.: Alyssum arenarium, Astragalus bayonensis, Galium arenarium, Hieracium eriophorum, Linaria thymifolia, etc. Collaboration with the Natural History Museum Fribourg (Switzerland), University of Bordeaux and Conservatoire Botanique National Sud-Atlantique, ONF.

Project Arenaria bernensis: Conservation biogeography, habitat differentiation, threats assessment, phylogeny and phylogeography, conservation methods for the narrow endemic A. bernensis (Caryophyllaceae) in western Prealps of Switzerland. Collaboration with the Natural History Museum Fribourg, Ecology and Evolution Unit of the University of Fribourg and HEPIA Geneva (Switzerland)..

Project Aquatic conifers: It explores the putative hydrophobia of gymnosperms and their relation to aquatic and wetland habitats. Main focus species: Retrophyllum minus (Podocarpaceae) endemic to New Caledonia, the genus Taxodium (Cupressaceae), Glyptostrobus pensilis (Cupressaceae) from China, Dacrycarpus dacrydioides (Podocarpaceae) from New Zealand and Dacrydium guillauminii (Podocarpaceae) from New Caledonia. Collaboration with the Natural History Museum Fribourg and the University of Bern (Switzerland).

Applied conservation biology projects: Threats assessment, distribution and conservation methods of the most endangered plant species in Western Switzerland: e.g. Inula helvetica, Carex chordorrhiza, Liparis loeselii, Veronica triphyllos, Dracocephalum ruyschiana, Eryngium alpinum, Typha shuttleworthii, Lythrum portula, etc. Collaboration with the cantonal administrations of FR, VD, NE, GE and BAFU.

Past Projects

Project Baldellia: Conservation biogeography, habitat differentiation, threats assessment, Linnean and Wallacean shortfalls, population genetics, phylogeography, conservation methods for the aquatic plant genus Baldellia (Alismataceae) in Europe and North Africa. Collaboration with the Universities of Zürich (CH), Neuchâtel (CH), Marburg (D), Turku (FIN) and the Countryside Council for Wales (UK).

Mangroves: Case studies on mangroves and global change: (1) Mangroves and global change in Bombetoka on Madagascar; (2) Mangroves and zonation in Tamarindo (Costa Rica).

Project Dryopteris cristata: Genetic diversity, historical bottlenecks, historical biogeography, distribution, threats assessment and conservation methods for Pteridophytes in Central Europe with special reference to D. cristata. Collaboration with the University of Zürich.

Urban ecology and biodiversity: Urban biodiversity, historical biogeography of endangered plant species, pavement vegetation assessment, conservation methods, influence of urbanization on biodiversity loss. Collaboration with HES Fribourg.

Historical biogeography and expansion of Lactuca serriola: Analysis of geneflow from crop to wild forms in lettuce (Lactuca serriola) and chicory (Cichorium intybus) and its population-ecological consequences in the context of GM-crop biosafety. Biogeographical analysis, addresses the background of L. serriola’s recent invasiveness into Northwestern Europe by an analysis of the distribution shift and genetic variation on a transect from south to north and from east to west through Europe using microsatellites (SSR). Collaboration with the University of Neuchâtel and EU.

Bridge species - transgene flow to the wild flora: Global change and the shifts in distribution and ecology of plant species; Climate change and the range of plant species (main interest: Brassicaceae plant family); Variation along a habitat type gradient of the expanding species Capsella rubella in comparison with Capsella bursa-pastoris as well as morphological and ecological differentiation between these two model taxa.
