This PhD thesis aims at investigating the cognitive and behavioral processes involved in collective decision-making in pedestrian groups with an approach that tightly combines experiments with models. We are looking for a student, familiar with the tools of statistical physics and the use of numerical simulations, which will participate in the design and analysis of dedicated experiments, and in the analytical and numerical study of theoretical models inspired from statistical physics and based on these experiments. Only non-French students can apply to the present PhD fellowship. The position will start on October 2013 and the net salary (for 36 months) is around 1450€/month, including medical coverage. The Group of Complex Systems and Random Networks (GNET) invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in the field of multiplex networks to develop analytic and computational tools for the study of the structural properties and dynamics of multiplex and interdependent networks.

Vittoria Colizza, senior researcher at ISI Foundation (Turin, Italy) and at Inserm (Paris, France) is this year’s recipient of the Young Scientist Award for Socio and Econophysics. This is the third time that an Italian scientist receives the award of the German Physical Society (after Fabrizio Lillo in 2008 and Santo Fortunato, ISI researcher as well, in 2011), among the most prestigious prizes in the world in the field of the physics of social and economic systems, assigned to researchers under 40. Colizza receives today the prize in Regensburg, Germany, during the annual meeting of the German Physical Society.

Prof. Helbing's Chair of Sociology at ETH Zurich, in particular of Modeling and Simulation, has an interdisciplinary focus, bringing together sociologists, physicists, political scientists, and computer scientists in order to answer fundamental scientific questions regarding socially interactive systems, using a quantitative approach.
