Social simulation is a multidisciplinary research field that uses multi-agent computational models to approach the study and understanding of complex social phenomena such as the functioning of markets, the emergence of social norms, the ethnogenesis, or the dissemination of information in societies among others. The Summer School in Social Simulation: A hands-on approach program, organized by the Laboratory for Socio-Historical Dynamics Simulation (LSDS - UAB) offers an intensive hands-on course on multi-agent modeling applied to the social sciences using the Netlogo modeling environment. Participants will be able to debut immediately in the field and to present their own simulation model at the end of the course. The program will be conducted by researchers in artificial intelligence, sociology, economics, archeology and other fields in the social sciences who, parallel to the course, will present the state-of-the-art research on the implementation of social simulation in their fields of expertise. The course is mainly directed to advanced students and researchers in the various fields of the social sciences who wish to approximate or to deepen in the knowledge of agent-based simulation to analyze complex phenomena in the context of social dynamics.

The 2012 edition addresses PhD students and young researchers to the forefront of research activity on data mining and modeling of complex techno-socio-economic systems. Recognized authorities in the field will give formal lectures tailoring these for an interdisciplinary audience. Participants will also have the opportunity to present the results of their research during a short communication session. Social life is increasingly characterized by interdependencies among actors, which give rise to self-organization, feedback-loops, unpredictable and unexpected system behavior, and other complex dynamics. Providing novel and fast ways through which the behavior of individuals may have implications for the behavior of others, information and communication technologies (ICT) seem to dramatically emphasize these tendencies. Agent-based modeling promises to be a major tool for a better understanding of such complexities that fundamentally challenge the way social phenomena are approached. The workshop invites poster contributions of cutting-edge research that draws on such techniques or on empirical data tostudy interdependencies in social life, with a special focus on techno-social systems.
The candidate's areas of interest should revolve around individual and collective animal behavior, animal cognition, animal movement, human social behavior, social transfer of information, and/or the development of new methods (GPS, RFID, computer vision, etc.) to collect and analyze large scale behavioral data. Candidates with experience in experimental work (lab and field) and/or theoretical work are welcome, as well as candidates with an engineering background but a demonstrated interest in biology, in particular the research areas mentioned previously.
Recommender systems have been recognized as a promising way to solve the information overload problem, whose main task is to find out what their users might like. Recent evidence demonstrates the significance of social influence and indicate that recommendations made by advanced techniques and algorithms are often less appreciated than those coming from our friends or acquaintances. The emergence of large-scale social network services, such as Facebook and Twitter, is facilitating the development of social recommendation. We seek high-qualified, original submissions of reports on research covering all the aspects of designs, techniques, algorithms, experiments, and empirical analyses on social recommender systems.

We invite contributed talks (30 min) to these parallel tracks.
The International Conference on Social Informatics (SocInfo 2012) is an interdisciplinary venue for researchers from Computer Science, Informatics, Social Sciences and Management Sciences to share ideas and opinions, and present original research work on studying the interplay between socially-centric platforms and social phenomena. To that end, we are inviting interdisciplinary papers, on applying information technology in the study of social phenomena, on applying social concepts in the design of information systems, on applying methods from the social sciences in the study of social computing and information systems, on applying computational algorithms to facilitate the study of social systems and human social dynamics, and on designing information and communication technologies that consider social context.

But he feels he is being made a scapegoat for the crimes his brother is accused of, his lawyer Anne-Sophie Laguens said
We select a few fellows every year, and we have them work with city governments. Instead of sending them off into the Third World, we send them into the wilds of City Hall. And there they make great apps and work with city staffers. But really what they're doing is showing what's possible with technology today.

The collective behaviour research group at Uppsala University uses a combination of mathematical models and experiments to understand the dynamics of animal and human groups. Some current projects on humans involve the study of socially contagious activities, such as audience clapping, and of how individuals integrate social and personal information when trying to answer trivia questions. We currently have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to work on similar projects, from a perspective that combines mathematical modelling with experimental work. You are welcome to submit your application no later than 18th November, 2011.
Why do firms invest large sums in advertisement? Why do students spend great effort on highly selective educational courses? Why do people follow certain dress codes although norm compliance is time-consuming and costly? Why do banks invest in marble entrance halls? Why did the path of evolution lead to the magnificent tail feathers of a peacock although this luxury inhibits the movement of the bird? Signaling theory put forward by economist Michael Spence and biologist Amotz Zahavi provides an answer. Signaling theory yields an explanation for the paradox of the ubiquity and stability of costly and wasteful activities to be observed in human social life as well as in animal behavior. Contributions (title, abstract, manuscript if available) should be submitted no later than January 31st, 2012 to one of the organizers or to Stefan Wehrli (wehrlist@ethz.ch).
