Faculty of Law

Doctoral Studies

The highest academic title issued by the faculty is the doctorate. It is reserved for students who wish to complete their education by means of a written scientific study (dissertation). In order to be admitted to the doctorate at our faculty the applicant must have a grade point average of at least 4.75 in the Master of Law. Candidates who have not studied in Fribourg must also fulfil the admission conditions of their home university (or home country if the home university does not award a doctorate degree). Students who wish to write a dissertation should contact the professor of the subject in question. Approximately three years are required to write a dissertation.

The prerequisites and the detailed procedure are laid down in the doctorate regulations concerning the attainment of a Doctorate in Law, and in the regulations from 28 June, 2006 for attaining the Bacherlor of Law (B Law), the Master of Law (M Law), the Master of Arts in Legal Studies (M A Legal Studies) and the Doctorate of Law (RBMD).
