Studying in Fribourg

Welcome to Fribourg ! We are happy that you have chosen our Faculty for your studies and hope that you will enjoy your stay. In order to help you choose your courses and study programme at Fribourg, we have prepared several pages of presentation and hope that they will help you spend a successful period of studies at our Alma Mater and beautiful city.

A wide range of courses, teaching in French and German (sometimes even in English), well organized study programmes, a Faculty open to foreign influences, and a dynamic city, all combine to create an environment ideal to receive the Swiss and foreign students who have chosen to study at our Faculty.

The University of Fribourg, situated in the heart of Switzerland and of Europe was founded in 1889 in the city of Fribourg. It is particularly distinguished by its bilingualism, its international character and its numerous research and teaching specialities.

The city of Fribourg is recognized as one of the most beautiful grouping of medieval architecture in Europe. Situated at the foot of the prealps, the Fribourg conurbation, with more than 75’000 inhabitants, offers multiple cultural, sport and group activities. The city lies on the linguistic frontier between the French- and German-speaking parts of Switzerland and thus both the city and the University are bilingual.

Right from its establishment, the University of Fribourg took on an international character and now has students from over 100 countries. In addition, the University actively collaborates in the activities of international organizations involved in university cooperation and is linked by conventions to numerous foreign universities. These international relations give members of the university community many possibilities of cultural, human and academic exchanges.

The University has over 10'000 students. The moderate size of the University of Fribourg has numerous advantages not only for studying but also in everyday life. We can offer a good choice of study programmes and, at the same time, keep a student to teacher ratio on a human dimension. The University of Fribourg is thus very convivial and the city maintains a good student atmosphere.

The Faculty of Law at University of Fribourg is one of the most renowned in Switzerland and, due to the number of students, the third largest in the country. The Faculty offers modern study programmes with attractive possibilities of specialization. The well-structured Bachelor programme lays the basis of the fundamentals of Swiss law and of a methodological approach. The Master programme offers a large range of courses enabling students to obtain advanced knowledge in various fields and to acquire a profile in cutting edge topics. Due to the interactive nature of the intensive courses, the Master programme actively encourages the acquisition of personal and social expertise, in addition to juridical competence.
