Prof. Philippe Gugler attended the Global China Business Meeting, Valencia, November 7-8th, 2011.
In the frame of the OECD 50th Anniversary, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg co-organized a public conference on the impressive development of international investment these last decades and its implications on growth and employment in Switzerland and in the world. In this context in perpetual evolution, OECD has been playing a crucial role in negociations and the definition of recommendations ruling the behavior of governments and multinational enterprises. Among the speakers, the organisators had the great honnor to welcome, among others, Pier-Carlo Padoan, Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD, Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen, Secretary of State, or Alain Berset, Member of the Council of States.
Professor Philippe Gugler, Michael Keller and Xavier Tinguely attended the 2011 International Business Conference on April 11-12 at the Henley Business School of the University of Reading (UK).
The Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg co-organized with the Scientific and Technological Center of the canton of Fribourg an international conference on clusters and competitiveness entitled "Clusters as Drivers of Regional Competitiveness: Strategic and Policy Issues" on March 25th, 2011. The aim of the conference was to explore the role of clusters as drivers of firms', regions' and nations' competitiveness. It brought together the most eminent academics in the field, successful cluster managers from different European regions and political representatives in charge of the regional economic promotion. As keynote speakers we had the honor to welcome Professor Christian Ketels from the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness of the Harvard Business School, Professor Örjan Sölvell, director of the Center for Strategy and Competitiveness of the Stockholm School of Economics, Ambassador Eric Scheidegger, head of the Promotion Activities Directorate of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and Beat Vonlanthen, State Councillor and Minister of Economic Affairs of the Canton of Fribourg. The conference was attended by more than 300 people from more than 20 countries. The audience was composed of MOC Harvard Business School affiliates members, academics, cluster managers, economic and investment promotion leaders, business CEOs and firm managers. Over the week of January 24, 2011, The Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg had the honor to welcome a group of 20 students from the NIDA Business School, Bangkok, Thailand. They attended an intensive course on competitiveness taught by professor Philippe Gugler.
Professor Philippe Gugler gets a distinction at the Harvard Business School (HBS) last December 14th, 2010. He has been elected to the HBS Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness Hall of Fame for his "outstanding contribution" in the field of competitiveness. This distinction was awarded by the world famous Professor Michael Porter. In his laudatio, Professor Michael Porter motivated this distinction according to the important contribution of Professor Gugler in the field of research, education as well as his direct involvement in projects of regional development. Mandated by the Economic Development of Riviera (PROMOVE), the Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg released a report entitled "La Compétitivité de la région de la Riviera" on the competitiveness of the Riviera region, authored by professor Philippe Gugler, Michael Keller and Xavier Tinguely.
Michael Keller presented a paper by Philippe Gugler, Laura Vanoli & Michael Keller entitled "Chinese SWFs: At the Crossroads between the Visible and the Invisible Hand"at the 4th China Goes Global Conference at Harvard University,Cambridge, USA. He also chaired a session on Chinese FDI and Europe.
Prof. Joseph Deiss, President of the General Assembly of the United Nations and member of the advisory board of the Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg, met President Barack Obama in New York last september.
We are proud to announce that Friday June 11th, Prof. Joseph Deiss, member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg has been elected as new President of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Prof. Joseph Deiss (Former President of Switzerland and former Minister of Economy and also of foreign affairs) will maintain his position as member of the Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg.

Prof. Philippe Gugler presented the impacts of the Center for Competitiveness of the University of Fribourg at the Harvard Business School last 14th and 15th december.
The Center for Competitiveness and the ZHAW School of Management and Law (Winterthur) co-organizes a workshop on "State aids to enterprises in difficulty: promotion or distorsion of the rivalry and competitiveness?". It will take place at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences on november 9. 2009. The point of view will be discussed and exposed by different experts of politicics, economics and state. In April 2008, the NIDA (Bangkok), MOC member, visited the University of Fribourg. Fifty participants, including NIDA professors and a MOC student class, attended a MOC lecture on "Swiss competitiveness according to Michael Porter's concept" as well as a conference on Swiss competitiveness addressed by Prof. Joseph Deiss, former President of Switzerland. The Cooperation between the University of Fribourg and the NIDA in the field of Competitiveness has been initiated at a MOC workshop held at the Harvard Business School in December 2006. Thanks to this collaboration, international conferences have been organized in Bangkok in January 2008 and 2009.
Professor Philippe Gugler is also regularly invited to give lectures on Competitiveness at the NIDA in Bangkok.
